The Second Listening Book – Review

Contemplative.  Thought-provoking.   Inspirational.  Funny.  All these, and more, could describe the contents of The Second Listening Book written by James Webb, Pastor, Missionary, and Story-teller.

The book contains a selection of short stories, each written to open the mind and heart to a world different to any we have known.

With titles such as; Be Careful What You Wish For; The Woman Who Couldn’t Keep a Secret; The Parable of the Boy Who Ran With Scissors and The Unexpected Guest, you cannot fail to be entranced by James Webb’s skilful writing, and his incredible imagination.

With more than two dozen tales to broaden your horizons, I am quite certain there will be at least one nugget within the pages that will make you sit up and take notice, or have you laughing unreservedly at the wit, and sometimes, absurd critters that James Webb calls into action.

This is a fun, informative and mind-opening publication, guaranteed to be a favorite with all age groups.

I found the book a very easy, comfortable read.  While entertaining the mind, on occasion it also caused me to rethink similar circumstances in my life, from a different perspective.

A very pleasant book with which to stop, sit and just enjoy.

Recommended for all.

Purposeful Design – Book Review

Purposeful Design written by Jay Schabacker, is a book to grace any coffee table.
Scientists and those with intensely analytical minds, typically favor evolution over creationism. It just makes more sense to them. They argue against an unseen God having constructed all that we see around and above us.

It is only on deeper study of the order in which all things work together, that doubts set in and explanations are sought.

Jay Schabacker was an engineer with the Apollo Moon program. After many calculations and comparisons, he reached the conclusion that there has got to be somebody in control of this universe, of which we are a part. Nothing would work the way it does, if all things progressed individually and chaotically.

He no longer dismisses God. In fact, he admits to a profound love for God, and for this wonderful world in which we live, and shares his thoughts willingly.

He has a greater understanding of the universe, now that he applies the creationism rule.

After intense scrutiny of investigative material and by examining charts of the universe and works of other scientists he developed and published this beautiful book. It will not only be a lovely addition to your coffee table, but will very likely, answer your own questions with it’s ‘what if’ segments.

Definitely an easy book to look at, and to understand.

I received a free copy of this book, from the publisher through Bookcrash, in exchange for an honest review.

Endurance Wins

BookCoverRiksEffort

Winners win, because they refuse to give up.  They push themselves to extraordinary limits in order to accomplish the goal of the race before them.

In Corinth, the Isthmian games demanded that an athlete endure ten months of rigorous training, in order to compete.  Failure to do this, meant there would be no crown and, definitely, no glory.

I began writing my book, A Stolen Childhood, Eleanor’s Story, four years ago.  Today it is available to buy as an e-book but the print version demands strict setup and because I am self-publishing, I am the person responsible for the final preparation.  Writing the book was time-consuming (naturally).  Editing even more so.

My goal was to have a printed page turning paper book in my hands.  This was, and still is, my goal.  The constant need of change to appearance, etc.,make paying large sums to ave it done by somebody else – very appealing.  The challenge is that I do not have large sums of money to use.  SO – I plod on; approaching one print company after another to find one that will give me the prize for which I yearn.  A printed copy of my book – that I did not have take out a mortgage to obtain.

Do I get frustrated?  YES.  Do I want to give up?  YES.  More than I care to admit.  Yet, if I do, all those years of effort are wasted.  Just as an athlete, in Corinth, could be deprived of the crown, I would deprive myself of the sense of accomplishment that holding a paper copy of my book would give me.

This morning I was reading my Bible (1 Corinthians 9:24-27) and the words within those passages caused me to reflect on my efforts.  I have been consumed by dollar thinking, without considering a much greater reward.  The tangible proof of four years of writing, editing, rewriting, setup, and angst.

I want that book in my hands, and so I need to refresh my determination in order to reach that goal.

Do you have an unfinished project, that you just wish you could finish?  Why not bring it out and get back to it – today?

Just a Thought

Just a thought.

I was thinking, that with all the rules and regulations regarding recycling that we have to comply with now, wouldn’t it be more logical for the government to approach the manufacturers of unacceptable containers and packaging, and make them use more acceptable methods?

If they did not produce hazardous or non-compostable packaging, then we ordinary folk would not have to wash our garbage, in order to prepare it for disposal or recycling.

It makes sense to me.

YO – YO PERSON

Philippians 2:12 (GOD’S WORD Translation) – My dear friends, you have always obeyed, not only when I was with you but even more now that I’m absent. In the same way continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling.

Ever watched a yo-yo? Up and down – up and down. Round and round! ? Excuse me – round and round?

A skilful player can direct the yo-yo up and down the string with incredible accuracy. The players’ dexterity can bring exclamations of awe from onlookers. Ever tried to ‘work’ a yo-yo? Looks easy doesn’t it? But what goes down does not necessarily want to come up again. Try as you might, it will wander sideways, round and round the string or around your hand, hitting you as it travels in the direction it chooses.

We can be somewhat yoyo-ish ourselves! Sometimes in life, especially before we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour – and sometimes even after we have, we can travel on chaotic pathways through life; trusting unscrupulous people (of course, we didn’t realize they were until it was too late), making bad decisions, choosing unethical lifestyles, the list goes on and on. We become tired and off centre – just like a yoyo in the hands of a novice player. When we become aware that we need to change, we have to look carefully for someone ‘tried and true’, a person who is worthy of our trust, but my dear friends, only God can live up to that expectation – no person is perfect enough.

We can continue in our own direction, doing as we please and sometimes hurting ourselves and those around us, or we can choose the way of complete truth – GOD! We alone can decide to invite Jesus into our lives, if we never have, and surrender (or re-surrender) our lives to His Lordship and in accordance with His direction in His Word, and you know what? He really does make a difference. God’s Word, is a true blueprint of right and wrong – His direction for the path you need to take, to make your life so much better than you can ever imagine. Don’t take my word for it – try it and see! You’ll be glad you did.

Psalm 118:8-9 It is better to trust in the Lord, Than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the Lord, Than to put confidence in princes. (NKJV)

Prayer: Father, we always think that we know better and always find out too late that we are ‘off centre’ because we have chosen wrongly. Please centre us! Focus us! Guide us because only then can we begin to choose wisely, and stop being a yoyo person. In Jesus precious Name, Amen.
