Stripped Bark

Looking out to the garden today, I was surprised to see bark stripped from trees beside the house.  If I did not know differently, I could say a bear was responsible; I can even imagine there are claw marks gouging the bark………………………..

Can anyone hazard a guess as to what the culprit might be?

I certainly hope my guess is incorrect!  🙂

Meantime, I continue to watch for birds returning from their winter sojourn, in warmer climes, as I anticipate spring-like weather and familiar critters in the garden.

Hoorah for spring!
